Footwork:

  • Focus on your feet: The foundation of climbing is putting as much weight at possible on your feet.  Remember your legs are much stronger than your arms.  So, good footwork is essential in climbing.
  • Your climbing shoes will help:  Climbing shoes are specially designed to help you stand on smaller things.  Try smaller footholds and experiment with how much weight smaller footholds can take.
  • Engage your legs: Your legs are your powerhouse! Push through your legs to drive yourself upwards, minimizing strain on your arms.

Keep the Right Grip:

Grip only as hard as necessary:  Gripping more than necessary to stay on the wall with your hands might make you feel more secure, but it will make you tire out quickly.   Only use the amount of grip needed.

Balance:

  • Find your center: Climbing is all about maintaining good balance. Stay centered over your feet as much as possible by keeping your feet under you or moving your body over your feet. This will help distribute your weight evenly and help you to rely less on arm strength.
  • Don’t be afraid to switch your feet on a hold:  To stay balanced and move up, sometimes you will need to switch your feet on a hold.  Try it, it’s easy and fun.

Body Position:

  • Keep it close:  For easier climbs it usually helps to focus on keeping your hips close to the wall. This will engage your legs and core, making you feel more stable and secure.
  • Extended arms: Straight arms are strong arms! When reaching for holds, aim to extend your arms as much as possible.

Movement:

  • Stay relaxed:  Don’t waste energy and straining when it’s not needed.
  • Deep breaths:  Take deep breaths and push with your legs.
  • If you can reach the hold, move your feet up higher.
